Overview

This app provides CMU students with a centralized platform for buying and selling new, used, and handmade goods, addressing the lack of a unified marketplace. By consolidating these transactions, students save time, connect more easily, and find items or services tailored to their unique needs.

As a UI designer, I played a key role in creating an intuitive user experience for the app. I was responsible for designing the layout, navigation, and visual elements to ensure that the platform was easy to use and visually appealing.

Current e-commerce platforms are fragmented by product type and don't offer a centralized space for new, used, and handmade goods. By limiting the user pool to CMU students, the app opens up unique opportunities for creators to gain exposure within a trusted community. With access to campus facilities and the ability to collaborate safely, students can engage in meaningful exchanges, fostering creativity and supporting one another in a secure, connected environment.

How might we create a centralized digital marketplace that connects CMU students to buy and sell creative works and used goods while building a collaborative campus community?

Introducing Scotty's Shop

Understanding
I interviewed 3 CMU students to see what they're experience is with using different e-commerce sites
Creating a site map and user flow together helped us visualize how to navigate through the necessary features/pages of the app.

Personas
User personas illustrate the diverse buyers and sellers using the app. Buyers would explore listings, request custom items, and connect with sellers, while sellers would showcase their work, fulfill requests, and build reputations through reviews. Presenting these scenarios/goals as personas helped with designing features that cater to these specific goals and motivations, aligning with our overall design objectives.
LowFi Prototype
The initial step was to get a rough sense of the main screens so I could discuss the vision with the front end/back end teams. I arranged the wireframes with simples colors and rough components for quick, clear visualization.

From there, I began to incorporate a brand identity that aligned with the app and the school community. I also started to improve the user flow and interactions.

Next Steps...

To ensure the design is effective, we need to test different layouts and configurations with users, so user testing will be conducted using a high-fidelity prototype. More features need to be added like sorting and filters. Working closely with my developer teammates, we aim to turn this project into a fully functional app, with the potential for a web version in the future.
